UPDATE: This restaurant has already closed up shop
JR’S BISTRO Everybody has been wondering what was
going on in the old Downtown Lakeland Twistee Treet location on Florida Ave. across from
the main Suntrust office. We are glad it is going to be a great new sandwich bistro, named
JR'S BISTRO. New proprietors are Bob & Roberta Rochester. This is not their first
endeavor; Bob and Roberta have several successful eateries under their belt in New Jersey
& most recently in Largo. (But, apparently not in Lakeland!) |

Lakeland's Landmark Bothers Bar-B-Q has closed! Owner and former football star Freddie Mitchell left for the West
Coast and likely not to return. Now the fate of Brother's remains in a Polk County Court
room in a dispute between Mitchel and former owner Mary Harris. If the Brothers Tradition
will continue remains to be seen. Choices for really GOOD BBQ are dwindling
as Carters BBQ, Happy Jack's BBQ and now Brothers have all closed. |

Another recent Restaurant to Bite the Dust is Syd's New York Pizza
They barely lasted a year and it's a mystery because they had some
pretty good food AND offered delivery to Northside & Central Lakeland.
For a time they even offered Online Ordering like the Big Pizza Chains.
They even had cheap rent! Oh Well, guess times are tough out there! |

Christy's Sundown Restaurant, a Winter
Haven ICON has closed.
End of an Era 1950's - 2009. This extremely popular restaurant founded
by 'Nick' & Ann Christy has been a Winter Haven "Institution" since the
early 50's. The Christy's retired and sold the business in 2007 to James
Bronkhorst who has reportedly closed "Christy's" due to the poor economy.
Rumors abound that Bronkhorst is selling the business to a member of
the "Fred's Southern Kitchen" family. Stay tuned...

Long standing Lakeland Icon: Wine & Roses Catering & Restaurant has
closed the doors. Wine & Roses was located on East Edgewood
Drive.
Owner Diane Waters was unsuccessful in trying to sell the business for
the past several years and has decided to retire with her husband to the
south Gulf Coast of Florida. |

The Red Elephant Pizza & Grill is taking over and renovating the old Barnhill Buffet
location on S. Florida Ave in Lakeland which has remained vacant for some time. They have
five other locations in Tallahassee, Panama City, Jacksonville & Tampa. Looks like a
fun family place to try once they get open. Gotta try the bucket of boiled peanuts for
sure! |

A New Winter Haven location for Fred's Southern Kitchen was delayed due to a recent fire while under construction &
remodeling of the old Shell's Seafood building. Originally scheduled to open June 1st, is
now finally open for business. This new Winter Haven location joins the Plant City,
Lakeland and recently opened Bartow Fred's Southern Kitchen locations. |

Cedar Creek Seafood! The Owner/Chef of the
old Cedar River Seafood Restaurant is back at the helm with a new version: Cedar
Creek. Currently under construction at the old Diane's Diner & Diane's Maid
Service location on E. Edgewood Dr. Plans call for a nautical theme with fish nets and
even a boat mounted to the wall. The dining area features both upholstered booths and free
standing tables. A sneak peek at the new menu shows very attractive pricing for lunch and
dinner. |

Lakeland at the Publix Lake Miriam Plaza give or take around July 1st. Tijuana
Flats (a Chain Restaurant) will join the local Independents Tapatito's South,
Pecos, Donna Julia's, Chicano's Tex-Mex & Abuelo's (chain) in the south lakeland area
for Nachos notoriety. |

Bella northside Plantation Square Publix plaza are opening their second location in Lake
Miram Plaza.
The location where a Cuban Cafe Takeout place used to be is being enlarged and currently
under construction. Look for a Grand Opening in May or June. |

Nan's Kitchen has moved from U.S. 98 North at the Liberty Square to 743 E. Memorial Blvd into
the former location of the short lived Lemon Grass Thai Kitchen. Nan's new location opened
early March ' 09. Bacon cheese burgers, Meatloaf like mom used to make, fried
cornbread & collard greens plus terrific service... need we say more? |
